The sea literally runs red with blood

Faroe Islands, Denmark, May 23, 2009--The sea literally runs red with blood as residents of the small town of Hvalvik watch a traditional whale slaughter in a nearby bay.

Long-finned pilot whales have been a staple of the Faroese diet since at least the ninth century, with an average of 850 whales taken annually. Island authorities today oversee the subsistence hunts, in which small boats herd the whales into a bay to be killed, generally via knife cuts. Each community then divides the whale meat evenly among its residents.
